It seemed to Jimmy Butler that life in the NBA was his life all over again, ignored and rejected as a child back in Texas, overlooked by all the big basketball schools when he so much wanted to play, secondary at Marquette as a backup role player when he arrived and then watching, watching, watching all the time even as …

The Knicks are supposed to be the second best team in the Eastern Conference, even beyond their 23-13 runner up record to the Miami Heat. The Bulls Friday in New York defeated the Knicks 108-101 for the third consecutive time this season, and in a game Knicks’ players have been saying they had circled after the beating they took from …

It felt like Bulls/Knicks Friday all over again when it really mattered. When Michael Jordan was in the face of Xavier McDaniel when he was bullying Scottie Pippen. When Pippen was dunking and stepping over a supine Patrick Ewing and then screaming invective at Spike Lee. John Starks dunking on Jordan and then Jordan, Pippen and Horace Grant stuffing Charles …

Back in Brooklyn, we used to call them “the M&M Boys.” They weren’t actually beloved by all, but we respected them. The Dodgers and Giants had left and the Mets hadn’t come yet. So it was M&M, Mantle and Maris, making the big plays when they were needed.
They’re not likely to be as celebrated, and certainly not in Brooklyn. …

Maybe Saturday’s Bulls 93-85 victory over the East leading New York Knicks wasn’t quite as good as it gets, but it was as good as it’s been this season for the Bulls.
Not only was it just the second victory over a team with a winning record. But it was the team coming off a blowout win in Miami and …

If Thursday on TNT’s national TV and in the United Center was an assessment for the Bulls against the Western champion Oklahoma City Thunder, the Bulls may be better than anticipated but not as good as they hope they can be.
“We were right there in the game,” said Luol Deng, who carried the offense with 27 points, including two …

First place, baby!
OK, perhaps it’s a bit too soon to celebrate being undefeated after the Bulls sweat-it-out 92-88 win Tuesday at the United Center over the Memphis Grizzlies in the preseason opener.
“Choppy,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau offered about a stuttering start and then a big third quarter before a group of regular irregulars shot one for 21 in …

When the Bulls took the court and opened the preseason against the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday at the United Center, they did so with a different look.
The most significant change, of course, was that Derrick Rose remains on the sideline as he rehabs a torn ACL. With Rose out, Kirk Hinrich started at point guard in his return to …

How about Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 21st at home against the Lakers? Nah, too early.
What about the Heat’s first trip into the United Center right after the All-Star break February 21? Probably still too soon.
OK, what about Derrick Rose playing his first game of the 2012-13 season at home Saturday, March 2 against the Brooklyn …

Well, maybe it doesn’t look that bad for the Bulls in the 2012-13 season, after all.
It’s not good, mind you, at least as long as Derrick Rose is recovering from knee surgery, which should be at least half the season. You lose the league MVP or your star and you get worse.
There are no shortcuts: Bulls go from …
